In the mid 1980’s, traditional hernia treatments seemed frustratingly painful and imperfect to our physicians.  One surgeon who decided to seek out safer and better solutions was Dr. David R. Joesting.  He began his quest in 1987, performing an extensive search of the medical literature on hernias.  He then traveled to the top hernia clinics throughout North America---from Toronto in the North to Los Angeles and Miami in the South.  After consultation with the world’s leading hernia experts, he instituted dramatic changes in how physicians treat patients.

Use of local anesthesia with sedation and incorporation of durable synthetic mesh became the preferred mode of treating hernias.  Laparoscopic surgery was added when that less-invasive technique became available, further cutting patient recovery times. Over the course of nearly twenty years, our practice has become proficient in all of the most beneficial advances in hernia surgery.

Today, most of our patients go home the same day they have surgery, and resume normal activities within just a few days.

Midwest Hernia Center now has seven experienced surgeons on staff who regularly train in the latest techniques, and continually monitor and incorporate new innovations in hernia repair products. Patients arrive from around the world to take advantage of our expertise.

Our surgeons have also become leaders in treating less-understood “sports hernias,” and have operated on hundreds of amateur and professional athletes. Most return to pain-free athletic activity in a very short time.

Although Midwest Hernia Center has grown in size and renown since its inception nearly two decades ago, one thing will never change. We will always remain dedicated to our mission of providing the best, patient-centered hernia repair using proven advances that yield the least possible discomfort and the fastest possible recovery.
